There are a few things!. I've just found something called Delayed sleep phase syndrome!. Basically from what I understand, it's pretty much that your hormonal body clock, (It's what I call it, where jet lag comes from, your body gets used to being awake a certain amount of time, and gets tired after that certain amount of time!.)
The cases of insomnia that I have seen or heard of (Not personally) are usually cases where the person sleeps perhaps once every 3 days!.
If you are able to eventually get a decent night's sleep every night, then it isn't insomnia!. (When I say decent night's sleep, I mean the required amount to keep your body functioning!. As you get older it seems to decrease, but as growing I think you need something like 9 hours a night!.) Some are fine with 7, and some get even less!.

There are professionals that will diagnose a patient properly, and often the case is that they diagnose them with insomnia, when it is something called a circadian rhythm disorder!.
