Can you be obese and have diabetes type 1?!

Question: Can you be obese and have diabetes type 1!?
Let me just start off with getting rid of all the stereotypes!. I do not consume 4 hamburgers, a large pizza, kfc and tonnes of chocolate in one day!. Most people think that because you are obese - you eat too much!.

I only eat 2 medium sized relatively healthy meals a day and no snacking ( I do however consume around about 1lr softdrink a day and know this is the cause of my weight problem)!. The problem is when I try to cut down on my sugar intake - i always end up with migraines and vomiting!. I have done so for about 12 years!.

I have gone to the doctors before and they always test me for type 2 diabetes!. Thing is - my body handles the sugar fine and my blood sugar levels are normal - as i said - it is when i stop the sugar - i get sick!.

Most people I know who are insulin dependant (type 1 diabetic) have trouble keeping weight on, is there a chance that you can have type 1 diabetes and be obese!?Www@Answer-Health@Com

Answers:
Diabetics have to pay attention to carbohydrates, not sugar exactly!. Cutting down on sugar, but still eating breads, pasta, etc!. would not change your blood sugar appreciably!. I don't think your problem is related to diabetes!. Diabetes is essentially a regulation problem - a problem regulating foods as they are digested!. Once turned into glucose, it wouldn't matter if it came from bread or cake or potatoes, the body sees it as the same substance!.

I konw that people can get addicted to sugar the same way you can get addicted to caffeine, and cutting it out cold turkey can cause headaches!. It sounds severe but it does not sound at all like type 1 diabetes!. For one thing, as someone else said, any screening for diabetes would have yielded a positive result whether it be type 1 or type 2!. Www@Answer-Health@Com

Insulin dependant diabetics come in all shapes and sizes!. Those that are compliant with their diets use less insulin and are thinner!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

If you were screened for type 2 diabetes it means you don't have type 1!. But the answer to your question is yes!. Especially if the patient sugar is well controlled!. But it is uncommon bec!. Patients with type 1 DM don't eat fattening food in general and because of the lack of insulin!. You have migraine that is induced by hypoglycemia!. The best rx is to ask your MD to prescribe something that prevent Migraines (Not something for the attack) yes, there are drugs you can take daily to prevent migraine attacks with varying success rates and if it works for you can drink diet drinksWww@Answer-Health@Com

Most people who have type 1 diabetes are a healthy weight because they take care of themselves and eat well, take the correct amount of insulin and also exercise!.

A type 1 diabetic may become overweight if their diet/insulin/exercise regime is off balance!. Eating excessively causes a rise in blood glucose levels so extra insulin may be taken which can lead to weight gain!. Also, exercising reduces the need for more insulin and can help maintain a healthy weight!. Therefore not exercising increases the need for more insulin, causing weight gain!.

When a person develops type one diabetes they are noticeably underweight because of prolonged high blood glucose levels, and ketones causing the body to use fat for energy because it can't utilise glucose because of a lack of insulin!.

Perhaps you have built up a tolerance to a certain amount of sugar/carbohydrates in your diet and when you cut them out completely, your body withdraws!. Maybe you should cut down on the sugar a little slower, over a few weeks to get your body used to it!.
You may well be developing ketones (non-diabetic people do this also when on a starvation type diet that restricts carbohydrates) which can cause headaches and vomiting!.

Perhaps you could speak to your doctor or maybe a dietician to help you out!.
