Can you just 'develop' lactose intolerance?!

Question: Can you just 'develop' lactose intolerance!?
I went on a toxic cleansing diet to get rid of toxins in my body so I can eat healthy foods rather than junk foods!.

Earlier I had a cup of coffee with a fair bit of milk, I also had a small carton of ice cream - could I develop lactose intolerance!?
I think lactose intolerance because after I had drank the coffee and ate the ice cream, 2 hours after I felt bloated, 'gassy' and I now have diarrhea (urgh!)!.

I never used to get diarrhea before I started eating better, I'm 17 now and the last time I had diarrhea I must of been around 4/5 years old!.

Any ideas what it could be!?

Thanks!. Www@Answer-Health@Com

Answers:
It is possible to develop lactose intolerance, but not in the sense you are thinking of!.

Your small intestines can stop producing lactase enzyme - which is the enzyme needed to break lactose (found in dairy products) into simpler sugars called glucose!.

So if you are lactose intolerant, it means your small intestine isn't making enough lactase enzymes so your body cannot digest any food with lactose in it - dairy products and some other foods that have small amounts of dairy!. (Such as some chocolates!.)

The best thing to do is go to your doctors!. I was diagnosed with lactose intolerance - despite drinking/eating dairy products most of my life!. When I started eating healthily, then drank a cup of tea, I had similar symptoms to you!.

Your symptoms, particularly the gas and diarrhea are linked to lactose intolerance!.

Go to your doctors and explain your symptoms to him/her, it is likely they will have you drink or eat something with lactose in, then test your breath for hydrogen - the gas that sits in the small intestine when the lactose food cannot be digested!. If you have large amounts of hydrogen gas showing in your breath sample, you will be diagnosed as being lactose intolerant!. It isn't bad, but you do need to make sure you get your calcium from other food sources, as it is vital to prevent future bone related problems!. Www@Answer-Health@Com

No, you'll not just have developed lactose intolerance!. It's possible that your new, improved diet (presumably rich in fibre, fruit and veg) is giving you diarrhoea!. This will stop after a few days, and you'll feel better when you've been eating well for a few days!.

However, a 'cleansing diet' that includes coffee and ice cream doesn't sound healthy to me!. If I were you, I'd just eat lots of fruit and veg, cut back on high-fat foods, drink more water and exercise!. This will be better for you; your liver's there to get rid of toxins, you just need to feed your body good things!Www@Answer-Health@Com

I am afraid this is just a load of hypochondriacal Tommy-rot!.

Firstly Detox has no medical benefits, it was invented by constipated upper class Edwardians, who refused to eat vegetables as they considered them purely for the lower classes!.

Secondly you won't develop lactose intolerance!. Please see your GP and have a sensible, rational discussion about your totally irrational fears, before things go too far!Www@Answer-Health@Com

You have an amazing organ that does the detox/cleansing for you; your Kidneys! Like Dr Frank said, neither is there a need for self induced detox, neither is there such a thing!. If you drink too much fat etc you will feel bloated and 'gassy', And for the love of god, please use the spell checker!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Yes, it is very possible!. And often it does occur at your age because you aren't drinking milk any more: You've moved on to grown-up food!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
