What do respiratory therapist do?!

they do breathing treatments ,regulate oxygen for nasal cannula's, chest percussion to loosen phlegm and the have to suction phlegm out of peoples lungs into a jar!. and it never ceases to amaze me with all the nasty stuff they have to do for a living, and seeing the results of all kinds of lung deceases that all the respiratory therapist Ive known smoke!. you would think they of all people would know better!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Hi, my name is Dan !.!.!. I have been a Respitratory Therapist for 32 years !.!.!.

First of all, RT's take care of all patient populations, newborn, pediatric, and adult !.!.!. it can be various settings from acute care hospital, children's hospital, rehabilitation hospital !.!.!.!. can work in the home care environment, as a sales person for a DME (Durable Medical Equipment) company or an actual RT taking care of the patients !.!.!.!. in a Lung doctors office doing diagnostic testing !.!.!.!.!. teaching in an RT school !.!.!.!.

You can do floor therapy which includes breathing treatments and exercises, chest physiotherapy, suctioning of the airway via the nose or mouth !.!.!. or through an artificial airway such as a tracheostomy !.!.!. providing non-invasive ventilation through a BiPAP machine !.!.!.!. drawing blood work !.!. generally from the artery !.!.!.!.

You can work in the Intensive Care Units !.!.!. which includes the Cardiac, Neurological, Trauma, Acute, Respiratorry, Thoracic, Medical or whatever flavor the hospital offers !.!.!. if the hospital is big enough they may work in the Emergency Room as a full time position !.!.!. if not !.!. you just float down there as the need arises !.!.!.!. in these areas you take care of the sickest of the sick !.!.!. you will have skills to perform CPR on all patient populations !.!. and in some hospitals you may actually "intubate" these patients (provide an artificial airway for them" !.!.!. you will handle the ventilation of these patients either manually or mechanically with high tech equipment !.!.!.

If you choose you can work in the pediatric or newborn areas !.!. which are highly specialized and provide a host of opportunities !.!.!. I work in Neonatal Intensive Care !.!.!. and fly throughout a 200 mile radius stabilizing and supporting premature infants to get them back to my hospital for advanced care !.!.!. I attend deliveries !.!.!. generally high risk !.!.!. and am part of the high risk neonate team !.!.!.!.

There is just so much to do !.!.!.!.

first of all!.!.they make good money!. I almost went for it too!. I don't know what else they do, but they do work with premature infants and do chest physio therapy on them to clear their lungs!. Www@Answer-Health@Com
