Why do my doctors stop prescribing me allergy medication once it goes over-the-c!

Question: Why do my doctors stop prescribing me allergy medication once it goes over-the-counter!?
For example, he used to prescribe Zyrtec for my seasonal allergies but not anymore since it went OTC!. Now he gives me Singulair!. The Zyrtec worked fine before and there's no noticeable difference with the new drug!. Www@Answer-Health@Com

Your doctor can prescribe any medicine he wants you to take, even simple tylenol or aspirin!. If you preferred the Zyrtec, you should ask him, especially if your insurance plan covered it!. They'll likely cover it if it's prescribed but not if you just purchase it on your own!. If money isn't an issue, why not simply buy it over the counter!?

Hope this helps! : )Www@Answer-Health@Com

Most doctors don't prescribe over the counter drugs, so now he has to do one that he can prescribe!. I think it's mostly a money thing!.

[EDIT] Thanks for clearing that up!. Apparently I was misinformed!.

Was just thinking!.!.!.you say your insurance is pretty good!. You might check the prescription policy!. There could be something in there about not covering OTC meds!.

OR

His switching could have had nothing to do with Zyrtec becoming OTC!. It could be that yeah it worked fine but had reason to believe the other might work better (even though you say there's no noticeable difference)!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

The first answer is correct!. Your doctor can prescribe any meds even the over the counter ones!. If you like Zyrtec then ask him to write a script!. The doctor shouldn't mind!. It's not a money issue!. Doctors don't get more money for writing only prescription meds!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
