Barium Enema...scared stiff!!

Question: Barium Enema!.!.!.scared stiff!
I went to a doctor on Monday about stomach pains I have been having and after finding nothing wrong, she set me up for a Barium Enema in early September!. I had never heard of this and thought nothing of it, but she then gave me a 'day-before kit' and it has horrified me! It is a medium sized bag (looks like colostomy bag) connected to a long tube and there is a bottle of liquid and some pills and a suppository!. The directions say that the day before this enema I am to lie on my stomach and insert the tube into my rectum and fill myself up with soap and water!. What, what what!?!?!? That bag is huge! I'd kill myself!
So my question is this!.!.!.!.is this Barium Enema procedure painful!? Do I have to be awake for it!? Do they drug you beforehand!? I am not big on pain at all and I am two steps from cancelling, but my husband won't let me!. Any advice on this would help as the online guides only tell you the medical aspect on the procedure, not the human reaction!. Thank you all!.

--My symptoms have been similar to Dumping Syndrome, which they are checking me for!. (I have not had any stomach or digestive surgeries)!. Sometimes (not all the time) right after eating (sometimes during) my lower abdomen cramps so severely that my legs feel numb and I begin to sweat and feel faint!. The pain lasts for about 20 minutes!. I have sever diarrheal cramps and the pain is only eleviated when I have a bowel movement!. Sometimes the pain is so severe I cannot have one, though, so it continues until the time I can!. I have almost had to have an ambulance come twice in the past two weeks due to pain and husband's fear I was dying or something!. I have been tested for tubal pregnancy (no), ovarian/cervical issues (no) and appendicitis (no)!. So, now they are doing this Barium Enema to check my colon for tumors or signs of Dumping Syndrome!. The 'lower abdomen' means about an inch or two below my belly button!.
Thank you all again for any advice or tips, or similar stories!. Www@Answer-Health@Com

I find it hard to believe that your doctor has ordered this procedure!. In this day and age, most people have colonoscopies!. For that you get an oral cleanout kit and are sedated for the procedure!. You have to be awake for the barium enema and it is a very uncomfortable procedure!. I'd ask my doctor to change the order to a colonoscopy!. Www@Answer-Health@Com

i have had this done, i have to say though i never had to stick a tube inside me though!. i drank something that made me have a bowel movement and i had to fast for a day!. as far as the procedure you will be awake, but the good news is they will give you something to sedate you!. its not a pleasant procedure, but it really isnt that bad!. you need to stay home to for at least a day or two!. once the procedure is over the barium will be coming out!. i know you are scared, i was too!. but for your health you really need to just do it and get it over with!. think of it as for your health and then a couple of days of relaxation!. good luck Www@Answer-Health@Com
