Answers:
In fact breast cancer IS almost unheard among under 25s - this is not silly, but a fact!. It's rare in women under 40 and very rare in women under 30; 80 per cent of those diagnosed with it are over 50!.

Every day young girls post on here terrified they have breast cancer because of perfectly normal hormonal activity, and explaining these facts to them is the only responsible thing to do, along with advising them to talk to their mother or a trusted adult!.

In answer to your questions, nobody knows what causes breast cancer; there are recognised risk factors - the greatest of which is getting older - but they are only risk factors, not causes, and the majority of women with these risk factors don't get breast cancer!.

Those risk factors are:

Getting older - 80 per cent of those diagnosed are over 50!.

5-10 per cent of breast cancer cases are due to hereditary factors!.

Having children at an older age or not at all!. The more children a woman has may also slightly lower her risk!. Breast-feeding helps protect against the disease!. The longer a woman breast feeds her children, the more she lowers her risk!.

Starting periods at a younger than average age (under 12) or having a late menopause (after 55)

Taking the contraceptive pill or hormone replacement therapy (HRT) causes a small increase in risk!. However, the risk gradually returns to normal after you stop taking them!.

Being overweight (especially after the menopause)!.

Regularly drinking more than 1 unit of alcohol per day slightly increases the risk of breast cancer!.

Having a previous diagnosis of breast cancer increases the risk of developing a new cancer in the other breast!.

- So, as no cause is known, it isn't possible to tell you how to prevent it - there are one or two risk factors you can avoid, but it isn't a guarantee of prevention!.

Being breast aware - the American Cancer Society recommends that women begin regular breast self-examination at the age of 20 - and attending appointments once you reach routine screening age are not preventative methods, but they will help towards ensuring that any concerns are caught and dealt with early!.

Sorry you have worries at the moment; I hope it works out well!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

You pretty much have all the answers there are!. The cause is not known, which is why there is no prevention or cure!. If you've already seen a doctor, then you're ahead of the rest of us!.

It might make you feel better to know that almost all lumps women find in their breasts are normal and benign!. In fact, self-examination has recently been in question because of the huge number of false alarms it raises!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
