Most ALS patients are expected to survive 2 to 5 years after diagnosis!. More than half lived beyond 3 years!.

Stephen W!. Hawking, who is probably best known to the general public is one of a very few people who have survived for many years with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS)!. Hawking, still alive, was diagnosed with ALS in 1963 when he was a 21year old graduate student at Cambridge University in England!.

Jason Becker, guitarist who once joined David Lee Roth's band, was diagnosed in 1988 with ALS and given three years to live!. Although he can no longer play guitar, speak, or walk, he remains mentally sharp!.

Others diagnosed with it who have succumbed after diagnosis were actors David Niven, Lane Smith, Michael Zaslow, and musicians Lead Belly, Charles Mingus, Hans Keller!.
