Hi, David!.

TSH prompts your thyroid gland to make thyroid hormones (t3 and t4)!. Your eleveated tsh level shows your body is sending a message to your thyroid saying, "Mayday! Not enough thyroid hormone, please make more and send it out!" (To know if the t3 and t4 are actually being produced by your thyroid, you would need the t3 and t4 levels checked also!.)

It does sound like your doctor is going by outdated guidelines, though, as normal TSH range is 0!.3 to 3!.0, with anything lower than 0!.3 being hyperthyroidism and anything over 3!.0 being hypothyroidism!. It's a bit worrisome he would not have told you if your TSH were 4!.5!

Thyroid isn't something the majority of doctors understand or have much up-to-date knowledge on, so you need to be CAREFUL and do your own research to make sure you are getting the treatment you need!. I cannot stress how important it is to NOT blindly accept what a doctor says about thyroid issues!. My TSH level got up to 47!.9 because of a lack of decent treatment!. A medical degree does not bequeath omniscience!. Ever!.

Your TSH level can be affected by medications (especially aspirin) and also stress!. It should not make much difference what time of day you take the test!. If you go back in two months and your TSH is still above 3!.0, consider getting your t4 and t3 checked!.

I don't think you need to be concerned or worried over this!. Just monitor the TSH and if it remains high you will likely take a pill daily (in the morning, on an empty stomach and without any other vitamins)!. Hypothyroidism can cause sleepiness, exhaustion, mental fuzziness, etc!. so be aware if those happen as they are symptoms!.

As far as lowering it to normal range, eliminate whatever stressors you can, eat a good diet (consider cutting out gluten as it has strong ties to hypothyroidism), and get plenty of rest!. I'm a bit puzzled that you make sure you "only get 8 hours of sleep!." If your elevated TSH is due to high stress, limiting your sleep right now isn't the best thing!. It would be better to allow your body the rest and repair time it needs!.

I've had hypothyroidism for ten years and it's the best site I have found so far!.

You really don't need to worry, thyroid problems are mostly genetic and there is nothing you need to do except continue to monitor it with your doctor and if you need medicine then you need medicine!.!.!.no big deal!.!.!.trust your doctor!.!.after all they went to school 12 years to learn this stuff, I'm sure he would not steer you in the wrong direction!.
