Kidney Failure??????!

Question: Kidney Failure!?!?!?!?!?!?
My grandpa has Alport's Syndrome!. Yesterday his levels of creatine and potassium in his blood were high!. I think he is supposed to go get checked out at the hospital today!. How do they decide if you need a kidney transplant or dialisis!? How long does it take for them to decide this!?!? Thanks!Www@Answer-Health@Com

Answers:
Dialysis is the first line of treatment!. This is determined by the creatanine and BUN (blood uric nitrogen) readings!. If they are HIGH but NOT very high the doctor may tell him to just watch his diet, and give him some medications!.

If his reading are VERY HIGH then they need to start dialysis!. If they do not start dialysis he could die before they get a transplant! Usually, they have to install a FISTULA into his arm and let it heal first, but if this is an emergency then they will use the veins in his neck to do the dialysis!.

The doctor will decide IF your grandpa can have a transplant!. It depends on his other health conditions!. If he has other conditions that make it difficult for him to have surgery, or he is very old, then dialysis may be the ONLY way he can live!.

A transplant is best if it comes from his brother or sister, IF he has one!. Otherwise, he will have to wait for a SUITABLE ORGAN DONOR -- like someone who dies in a car accident!. Many many tests have to be made to make sure that the donor is suitable!. In this case it takes about three years to find a new kidney!.

After the kidney transplant, you grandpa will need to take ANTI-REJECTION MEDICINE!. This will help to see that grandpa's body doesn't try to kill the new kidney!. Unfortunately, this will make him very susceptible to other infections, like colds and flu!. He will need to be VERY careful that he doesn't catch a cold!

There is also the possiblity that the kidney transplant will fail, even after taking the medicines!. In this case he will have to go back to dialysis for the rest of his life!.

the determination is made by measuring the levels of toxins in his urine and his blood, and by doing several tests on his kidneys to see if they are functioning!. The process once begun can take as little as a day or as long as a week!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
