"Oxygen causes cancer. . ."?!

Question: "Oxygen causes cancer!. !. !."!?
The title is kind of misleading, though!. About a year back, some friends and I are were talking about how everything causes cancer (somebody had brought up the plastic in Christmas lights, or something)!. At any rate, everybody was rattling off examples, and I mentioned the above, that cancer can be caused by oxygen!. At which point everybody broke into laughter because it was such a ridiculous idea!. One guy was especially adamant about how wrong I was, and has kept the subject going, even though this was about a year ago!.

At any rate, I had some prior knowledge that lead me to the statement (my teacher had mentioned something about it during A!.P!. chem), and it turns out that what I was referring to are free radicals, specifically "oxygen derived species"!. Essentially these are anions or compounds of oxygen (you can read more about them here: http://www!.carcinogenesis!.com/content/5/!.!.!. )

At any rate, I think that my statement that "oxygen can cause cancer", although it's admittedly a bit vague, contains a lot of truth!. The oxygen derived species were created by the metabolism of oxygen, after all!. I think that this anion would be the best case for my argument: 02- (the 2 should be subscript)!.

At any rate, I conceded the point to him that my statement was too broad, and he won't even admit that what I said wasn't completely wrong and stupid!.

Answers:
Technically correct but potentially misleading!. Oxygen can react with other atoms, resulting in free radicals (atoms with unpaired electrons which are quite reactive with other molecules; this reactivity can be damaging, and potentially if interacts with DNA could result in genetic changes leading to cancer [this is highly simplified of course])!.
You are not completely wrong of course, just weren't comletely right either ;>)!.

Right!. This was discovered decades ago!. You may have read it somewhere and simply not recall it!. Happens all the time!.

It's not oxygen that causes cancer !.!.!. and it is not proven for sure that free radicals do, but it is a strong possibility that free radicals damage DNA, and it is possible that once in a while, this is the source of some cancers!. Www@Answer-Health@Com

Hmm well i don't really know an opinion but on the news here not so long ago they said that reasearchers believe they have found that vitamin C can give you cancer!.
So pretty much anything, i think!.

But i think they major on is old cereals and nuts!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I'm sorry but you got it all wrong!. The below sites will attest to the fact that hydrogen peroxide esp 32% and oxygen can treat cancer!.:

You know something, the doctors in Australia who theorized that bacteria caused a high percentage of stomach ulcers were hee-hawed by the medical establishment!. They later won the Nobel Prize for Medicine for their discovery!. Cancer gets it's oxygen supply from blood, if you can cut off the blood supply to the cancer it dies!. I had this discussion with a pharmacist when we discussing alternative medicine!. Oxygen does cause free-radical damage and athletes such as track and field athletes are prone to that damage from breathing deeply!. I've known some track stars at the university where I work who become chronically fatigued by the end of the school year, and they need to get checked out by a doctor!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
