Question: Mold Mildew or Not Help Me!?
I have recently moved into a new apartment that has new drywall because a pipe burst in here in here last december!. However the wierd thing is the carpet was not replaced!. I know because it has a few burn holes in it!. Well ive noticed a slight smell inthe area by where the drywall was replaced!. The smell is on my carpet!. It dosnt smell good it smells old and not clean at all!. I dont quite know how to explain it!. Ive tryed like carpet freshner and spray but it dosnt go away!. Why wouldnt they relpace my carpet especially if it smelled!. They know i have babies one is 6 yrs old and one is 5 months!.
I am going to call them and see what the problem is but from me describing this does it sound like thats what it is!. And if it is could we get sick or will everthing be ok!.
I know i sound silly but im worried and dont want ne thing bad to happen to us!. Is there any way i can check to c if it mold by myself in case they lie to me!.

It is probably the carpet PAD that is smelling!.
It probably wasn't dried out properly after the pipe burst and it has mildewed!. Mildew has a very particular scent!.!.!.bad!.
If possible, you can pry up the corner or edge of the carpet from the tack strip and pull it back a few inches!. Feel the pad to see if it is damp or shows signs of mildew or mold!.
Not all mold is toxic and dangerous, and mildew is harmless-it just stinks!.
You don't sound 'silly' because you are concerned for your families health-but don't over worry about this!. If there is mold and it is confined to the area of carpet around the wall it will be really a cheap and easy fix for the landlord!.
If you can find LYSOL disinfectant at your store, spray it on the carpet pad, leave the carpet pulled back until the pad dries and see if that helps!.
