Answers:
When you cough and there is mucus that is produced, it could be due to:

* Viral illnesses!. It is normal to have a productive cough when you have a common cold!. Coughing is often triggered by mucus that drains down the back of the throat!.
* Infections!. An infection of the lungs or upper airway passages can cause a cough!. A productive cough may be a symptom of pneumonia, bronchitis, sinusitis, or tuberculosis!.
* Chronic lung disease!. A productive cough could be a sign that a disease such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is getting worse or that you have an infection!.
* Stomach acid backing up into the esophagus!. This type of coughing may be a symptom of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and may awaken you from sleep!.
* Nasal discharge draining down the back of the throat (postnasal drip syndrome)!. This can cause a productive cough or the feeling that you constantly need to clear your throat!. Experts disagree about whether a postnasal drip or the viral illness that caused it is responsible for the cough!.
* Smoking or other tobacco use!. Productive coughs in a person who smokes or uses other forms of tobacco is often a sign of lung damage or irritation of the throat or esophagus!.

The other possibility is:

Bronchitis is a respiratory disease in which the mucous membrane in the lungs' bronchial passages becomes inflamed!. As the irritated membrane swells and grows thicker, it narrows or shuts off the tiny airways in the lungs, resulting in coughing spells accompanied by thick phlegm and breathlessness!. The disease comes in two forms: acute (lasting less than 6 weeks) and chronic (reoccurring frequently for more than two years)!. In addition, people with asthma also experience an inflammation of the lining of the bronchial tubes called asthmatic bronchitis!.

Whatever the case might be, you will definitely want to see your doctor when he/she comes back from holiday if the coughing is still there!.

In the meantime, drink lots of fluids, especially water and juices!. If you have a box of flavored jello (any flavor), mix it with one cup cold and one cup of hot water and drink it while it's warm!. The gelletin in the jello will help to coat the throat, and should ease the coughing for a while!.

Try to spit out any mucus that is produced!. Watch the color of the mucus!. If it is yellow or green or contains blood, see a doctor as soon as possible!

Take care of yourself!. I hope it's nothing serious!. Www@Answer-Health@Com
