Has anyone ever heard of a patient pulling his own life support tube out?!
Question: Has anyone ever heard of a patient pulling his own life support tube out!?
My 21 year old cousin was in a bad car accident last Saturday!. He had to be put on life support!. I just got news this morning, that he somehow managed to pull his life support tube out!. He was alone maybe 5 minutes, and managed to do this!. He is breating on his own, but his breath is shallow and fast!. His oxygen levels and everything seem to be fine, but they are keeping an eye on him!. Has anyone ever heard of such a thing!? Oh I forgot to mention his arms were restrained!. Www@Answer-Health@Com
Answers:
Yes, assuming you are referring to the tube into the trachea!. It's a constant problem, because ways to attach it very securely cause other problems with patient care and comfort!.
Confused, disoriented, agitated and angry patients can be amazing!. I once had a patient work the tube out with his tongue!. I had a patient with all four limbs restrained and three people holding him throw his head around until the tube worked out!. Sometimes the tubes are just not properly secured!.
