I am very sorry for the loss of your niece!. The kind of meningitis your niece may have had was bacterial (meningococcus, casued by Neisseria meningitidis)!.

Meningococcus can cause meningitis (swelling of the brain stem and spinal cord membranes)!. But it can also cause a toxis sepsis that kills very rapidly within hours!. This is marked by blotchy purple rashes on the skin!. Symptoms include HIGH fever, headaches, fatigue and stiff neck!.

Meningococcus is EXTREMELY contagious, and it can spread by sharing cups!. That's why they gave your family a preventive dose of antibiotics!. There are also vaccines against meningococcus, but they're usually targeted towards adolescents and young adults!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
