Answers:
I know that it caught up with me eventually!. I smoked for over 40 years (without so much as a sore throat or a cough) then, all of a sudden, I began to notice that it was very difficult for me to walk up hills, or run!. Within a few months, I was having difficulty breathing when I lay down in bed - and so I had to stop smoking!.

Thanks to advice that I received here on Answers, I got Champix tablets from my doctor and I stopped within 5 weeks!. I had a series of chest infections and coughs for a few months after I stopped but now I have no problems at all!.

I haven't had a cigarette since 9th October 2007!. Stopping smoking has made a fantastic difference to my life and I wish I had had the sense to stop years ago!.

To be able to breathe properly is great!. I can smell things again and my food tastes so much better!. I am a LOT healthier than I used to be!.

I hope your dad continues to have no problems with his smoking - but I hope even more that he will stop and gain even half the benefits that I have since I stopped!.

Good luck to him! Www@Answer-Health@Com

There's no telling -- it's a lottery!. He's a light smoker, so the risks in his case are lower than those of the average smoker, who smokes about four times as much as he does!. However, smoking even six cigarettes a day can significantly increase heart attack risk, and at his age, that's significant!. He would be well advised to stop!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Smoking doesn't guarantee that you'll get a smoking related illness, it just increases the chances!. He might be fine, he might not!. 50% of smokers die from a smoking related disease though so it's basically a flip of a coin as to whether he'll die from lung cancer, emphesema etc!. or die from something unrelated to smoking!. There's no way of knowing when it could happen either!.

Of course, the best advice is for him to give up!. Easier said than done!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Same with my mother!.!.!. she's been smoking since she was 16, she's 52 now and she's still as healthy as a rhino

but she has adopted a more active lifestyle in recent years which may have helped (jogs alot, eats well, plenty of fruit&veg)
a lot of her friends are dealing with or have dealt with cancers due to their smoking, but she's had no major ailments in her life at all

it comes down to good genes and good luck
our parents have both it seems

just be very thankful ;)Www@Answer-Health@Com

My father is similar!. He's 64, and smokes a pack a day!. This after being a 3 pack a day smoker for years!. He also has never had a smoking related illness!. He's been smoking 50 years too!.
My grandparents are 87 and 83, and have been smoking over 60 years each, with no signs of slowing down!.
So all 3 have been beaten the smoking odds!. Www@Answer-Health@Com

Of course it will!. Smoking kills!. Not just him, but the people around him also that breath in the second-hand smoke!. Encourage him to stop and support him in his efforts!. My grandfather didn't die until he was 65, but it was from smoking!. He would have lived another 10 years if he didn't the doctor said!. Lung and throat cancer are not pretty ways to go!. Watching someone suffer from the pain of cancer is horrible!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

there is no way of knowing what will happen and there are alot of risks associated with smoking but that doesn't mean that everyone who smokes will be affected by them i know of a person who smoked 20 a day and lived until they were 96 with no smoking related illness!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

well i hate to burst your bubble!.!.!.but dont expect that he will go more farther!.!.<i guess> because there is this saying that 1 cigerette stick is equal to one day of your life!.!.it is kinda' unbelievable but if you understand it deeper and be more practical!.!.!.!.because you can never guess what time or when an attack cause by cigerette smoking will happen!.just dont expect too muchWww@Answer-Health@Com

It's impossible to tell, my grandad was lifelong unfiltered cigarette smoker and died at 90 after leading a very healthy life but I deal with people everyday who have very serious smoking related illness as young as 38!. Although smoking vastly increases your chances of getting very ill, it doesn't hit everyone!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
