Had a pendicectomy which got infected post op should i be worried?!

Question: Had a pendicectomy which got infected post op should i be worried!?
got discharged after a pendicectomy then got rushed back in hospital 2 days later because it was infected, as the nurse removed my staples all the infectioned oozed out!.
my wound was then opened up by the dr, its a good 9 inch because it was a complicated op, my appendix wernt located where they should have been so they had to make a big cut

whilst in hospital they packed my wound with iodine soaked pads and then introduced the vac machine 3 days later
had to come off the vac it was too painful when changing the dressings, so they just packed it with dry cotton wooly stuff

at home now and district nurse comes to change the dressing once a day, she said theres slough inside the wound, should i be worried!?
and can someone tell me what slough is, my guess is that its an inactive infection!?
im not in pain, not having any temperatures, i did feel sick earlier but that has passedWww@Answer-Health@Com

Answers:
Slough = the term for the viscous yellow layer which often covers the wound and is strongly adherent to it!. Its presence can be related to the end of the inflammatory stage of healing when dead cells have accumulated in the exudate!.

Or in English - slough is the dead cells hanging around and mixing with the normal ooze of a healing wound!.

So slough is a sign of healing!. The district nurse may well clean this out with swabs when changing the dressings!. Ask her when she visits tomorrow!.

If you've been sent home, then hopefully the hospital gave you things to look out for!? If not, then here they are:
- temperature
- chills or sweats inappropriate to the room temperature
- swelling, redness, increase in tenderness of the wound
- bleeding from the wound
- change in discharge from the wound - especially if the discharge is brown or green or becomes newly smelly

If you get these symptoms, call the district nurse service for advice, or return to your A&E!.

Have a good recovery!.
