Advice from anyone with experience with Downs Syndrome teens?!


Question: Advice from anyone with experience with Downs Syndrome teens!?
My neighbour's son has downs syndrome and I've offered to take him to the local shopping centre for a day out!. I'm going to their house tomorrow to spend some time with him so he gets used to me, but I wanted to know if anyone had any advice!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Your best option is to find something you have in common with him and talk about that a lot and if you ever have any trouble understanding him just say; hold on, slow down and say that again for me!.

Make sure his mother tells you of any fears he may have,,,, ie dogs, traffic, horns tooting!. etc
Also ask about if he can go to the toilet on his own or should you accompany him,
I say this bcos i know a 12yr old who takes all her clothes off when going to the toilet, it doesnt matter if the toilet is in the shopping area, local park or school, also she has an unnatural fear of dogs, and gets hysterical if one is within 10yards of her

I have no experiance with them but I can give advice!. Go slow and steady!. Do not get angry at him/her even though they might do bad things, they do not mean it!. i hope this helpsWww@Answer-Health@Com
