Heart transplants - Can men receive women's hearts and vice versa?!

Question: Heart transplants - Can men receive women's hearts and vice versa!?
That's the basic question!. I've been searching for information on this and have yet to find any, so a useful link/links would be welcome!. I'm also wondering if factors like weight, physical condition from exercise (or lack thereof), blood type, habits (smoking, drinking) would make any difference in a male-female heart transplant (assuming it's possible) if at all!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Answers:
Organs, outside of the reproductive system, of course, are not gender specific!. Meaning, that the gender (sex) of the donor and recipient has no bearing!. Blood type, tissue type and compatibility are required and even if someone is the same blood type, there is still many factors that determine if an organ (such as the heart) will be compatible in the recipient!. However, male or female is not one of those factors!.

I'm not sure what you are asking with regards to weight, exercise, or habits!. However, if a recipient wants to be considered for a donor heart (or other organ), their doctor will want to ensure that they are otherwise as healthy as they are able to be so that the transplant will be successful!. Severe obesity could create complications, as would health limiting habits such as smoking or alcohol abuse!. However, most patients requiring a heart are likely not healthy enough to engage in exercise!.

If you are asking about the donor's health and habits, for the most part they are only in question if the habit has created a diseased organ!. For example, an alcoholic would not be a viable donor candidate for someone needing a liver!. (That information may or may not be available due to the way that donor organs are received, but examination/tests of the organ can give some information)!.

Hope that helps!.

Of course!. All human hearts work the same way, but not diseased!.!. Same goes for liver, kidneys, lungs, bone marrow, and blood as long as everything is compatible!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
