Answers:
Metformin is THE most popular anti-diabetes drug in the United States (http://en!.wikipedia!.org/wiki/Metformin ) and MILLIONS have used metformin: http://en!.wikipedia!.org/wiki/Metformin#c!.!.!.
By far, most people go on metformin because of diabetes, although it is also used to treat polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and a few other things: http://en!.wikipedia!.org/wiki/Metformin#I!.!.!.
Unlike other anti-diabetes drugs which tend to make people gain weight, metformin does not cause weight gain!. It can help lower cholesterol, and does not cause dangerous low sugar (hypoglycemic) reactions, either: http://www!.diabetes!.org/uedocuments/df-r!.!.!.
This is why the American Diabetes Association recommends it as the first drug to be added for diabetes: http://care!.diabetesjournals!.org/cgi/con!.!.!.
(Look under "3!. Approach to treatment" -- or Figure 1!.)
Of course, no drug is without side effects!. Metformin can cause gut-grief (diarrhea, nausea, vomiting): http://en!.wikipedia!.org/wiki/Metformin#G!.!.!.
However, these are not dangerous (unlike the low sugar reactions which you can get with other anti-diabetes medications), and seem like a small price to pay for a drug that can actually save lives: http://www!.cochrane!.org/reviews/en/ab002!.!.!.
Hope this helps!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
