Here are some facts about ALL:
- Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is a cancer of the white blood cells, the cells in the body that normally fight infections!.
- In ALL, the abnormal cells may collect in the brain or spinal cord, also called the central nervous system (CNS)!.
- In cancers such as leukemia that appear throughout the body during their earliest stages, screening does not appear to be useful!. Rather, children with any symptoms that suggest the possibility of ALL should be seen by their physician!.
- Although leukemia cells from different children with ALL often look very similar under the microscope, there are actually many distinctive subtypes of ALL!.
- With the exception of prenatal exposure to X-rays and specific genetic syndromes, such as Down syndrome, little is known about the causes of and risk factors for childhood ALL!.
There are different sub-types (B Cell, T Cell, Pre B cell, etc) and risk factors associated with A!.L!.L!. My 2 year old niece was diagnosed with High Risk Pre B A!.L!.L!.!. The doctors told her parents that if you have leukemia, pre B A!.L!.L!. is the best type to have - meaning it has a more favorable prognosis (doctor's prediction of how a patient's disease will progress, and whether there is chance of recovery) then other types childhood leukemia!. My niece will undergo 3 years of chemo and radiation to the brain was also mentioned as possible treatment option!.
Your friend's treatment plan could very well be different - he may have a different sub-type of A!.L!.L!. and/or different risk factors that play into the treatment plan and prognosis!.
Also, I'm not sure what a bone marrow thing is!. They have bone marrow biopsies which are used in diagnosis and testing and then they have bone marrow transplants which is an entirely different thing!. Bone marrow transplants have lots of risk factors and are dangerous!. However, depending on the patient's prognosis, sub-type and risk factors associated with the diagnosis, sometimes bone marrow transplants are the best (or only) chance to defeat the leukemia!.
