I am a paediatric nurseWww@Answer-Health@Com

Units of blood that are not used and become outdated are packaged up in bio hazard boxes and sent off to be incinerated!.
When a unit of blood is checked out by nursing and infused into a patient, depending on the hospital, either a segment or 2 are retained or the empty unit is brought back to the blood bank and are held for 7 days in case there is a delayed transfusion reaction so an investigation can be done!.
After the 7 days, provided the patient has not had a delayed reaction, the expelled units are packed up into bio hazard boxes and sent off for incineration!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

It is disposed of as contaminated clinical waste and is indeed burnt in incinerators!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
