canker sores are not caused by either!. its not a virus or a bacteria, the cause however is unknown!. its just a sore that forms!.
cold sores however are a virus, the herpes virus, but a different one from the one that causes the STD!. cold sores can be passed by sharing drinking glasses, kisses, etc!.
