Is it true that....?!

Question:

Is it true that....?

Bacterial vaginotis leads to yeast infection? I was reading some questions on here concerning BV and learned that when you have BV it may lead to YI. How likely is that?

Answers:

Actually, bacterial infections and yeast infections are two seperate things, that can happen independantly, or they can both be present at once.
There are many reasons why the normal bacteria in the vagina may start to behave abnormally. Sometimes it is from a change in the pH of the area, either from diet changes, or douching (which is one of the reasons you should not do this), or stress, or even sperm being in the vagina. One type of bacteria will start to multiply out of control. Often this results in a pH change, as the normal flora is wiped out by the bacteria taking over.
So when this bacterial infection is taking place, sometimes, it makes the vagina more suceptible to a yeast infection also, because the yeast prefers a certain atmosphere.
The sooner you get bacterial vaginosis treated, the less likely you are to develop a yeast infection.
