Mitral Valve Prolaspe??!

Question:

Mitral Valve Prolaspe??

My mother was dx'd with Mitral Valve Prolaspe 20 years ago....she use to take meds for it. My question is she is having very bad fatique symptoms...could this be caused from her MVP getting worse???

Answers:

Some people with MVP after a long period of time do develop another problem called mitral valve regurgitation. If the valve does not close tightly enough, blood can leak (regurgitate) into the upper chamber. The heart then has to work harder to pump this extra blood. Over time, this can damage the heart.

Mitral valve regurgitation can either be ongoing (chronic) or sudden (acute). Chronic MR develops slowly, possibly over decades, and symptoms, such as shortness of breath, fatigue, and swelling in the feet and ankles may appear.

She should be checked out by a cardiologist and have a echocardiogram. I had mitral valve prolapse for many years, but then developed mitral regurgitation and had to have my mitral valve replaced. The one thing I experienced the most was very chronic fatigue symptoms.

Not saying the above is what is going on with her, but she should definitely should see her physician. Better to be on the safe side.

Best wishes to you both.
