I am a type one diabetic and I would like info about the pump. Can someone explain it to me?

I have been taking injections for 7 years.

I have been pumping for 2 1/2 yrs and I absolutley love it! It very convinient and quite easy to use.

This is a delivery system about the size of a cell phone and delivers fast acting insulin (Humalog/Novalog) through a tiny canula which is inserted under the skin every 3 days.

It has a reservoir which you fill with insulin and insert that into the pump and attach the tubing with the canula attached, then, with an inserter, you "inject" the canula just under the skin of your belly, thigh, or flank.

The pump will then shoot tiny amounts of insulin throughout the day (acting as your Lantus does). Then, when you eat, you enter the amount of carbs you plan to eat and the pump will deliver the proper amount of insulin which your doctor has set for you. (mine is set to deliver 1 unit for every 10 grams of carbs). If your bg is elevated then the pump will deliver the correct amount of insulin to correct that number (which is also set by your endo). You no longer have to break out your calculator and figure bolus/correction ratios.....the pump does that for you.

It does not hurt and for me is very comfortable to wear. You just disconnect the pump when you shower, swim, or during "intimate" moments.

Now, one problem I have with it is that sometimes I will choose a site that is right at blue jean waist line and that can be somewhat painful, but usually not enough so that I have to change sites. Also, you MUST check your bg more often until you get the hang of this. It will usually take a few months to get all the settings correct and adjusted to your personal needs but all in all I think you will love it. My A1c went from a 10.5 on shots to my current A1c of 6.8.
