Homosexuality was considered a mental illness, and was listed as such in a yearly psychiatric text book called the Manual for the Diagnosis and Statistics for Mental Illness (MDSI) until 1974.
It isn't a choice either (though some people might choose to engage in or experiment with homosexual activity for whatever reason, much in the same way people experiment with drugs. Your surgeon might be a rather conservative Christian or some other religious nutter, and no amount of research or medical evidence will change his dim view of being gay.
