Yes, this can happen!. There are tumors that can mimic a pregnancy called Gestational trophoblastic disease, some are benign and some can be cancerous!. It is difficult to say if this is what you are talking about or not!. These used to be called 'molar pregnancies' !.
These types of tumor or cancer can give a positive pregnancy test!. One type, choriocarcinoma, can occur early after a fetus is lost, but the tumor continues growing!.
