my son has sucked his thumb since he was 3 yrs old and hes 7 now and he still is how do i get him to stop?
Answers:
Thumb-sucking is a form of self-comfort. What is he comforting himself against? Have there been any significant events in his life up until now? Major illness? Deaths? Divorce? Anything that would cause emotional upheaval? Do you nag or belittle him unintentionally? Are you emotionally unavailable to him? Is there a lot of fighting and yelling in the home? Is there violence in the home? Do you spend little time with him? Is he picked on by someone older or bigger? Ask yourself these and similar questions. Is there any reason you can think of that might cause emotional problems for your son?
Examine your family dynamics and history since his birth. If, for example, your son is emotionally insecure, resolve that and the thumb-sucking should stop in time. Family counseling may help.
