I am a Registered Respiratory Therapist as well as a Registered Nurse. Hon, it sounds to me that if you are breathing fine one minute, then when you began to think about it and focus on your breathing you begin to feel short pf breath it has got to do with anxiety. Does you heart begin to feel as though it is racing as well? If so, you perhaps are having panic attacks as well. Its not good that you are living in a house with 5 smokers, but I am assuming that you are young and chances are you would not develope some kind of chronic lung disease at such a young age. Second hand smoke is JUST AS BAD for your health though. I know that you do not want to hear this but try some meditation and some deep slow breathing next time you feel one of these "attacks" come on. If this does not work you are going to have to seek some medical attention if it is something that is interfering with you life...perhaps some anti-anxiety medication if this is perhaps the problem. E-mail me if you have ANY questions at all sweetie :) Nikki
