Question:

Is hospitalization needed for chronic lyme disease treament (intravenous antibiotic treatment)?

Answers:

My daughter had IV antibiotics for Lyme. The PICC line (catheter) was inserted at a medical facility, because they have to xray it to make sure it's properly placed. After that, we did the daily infusions ourselves, with weekly home visits from a nurse who changed the dressing and generally checked things over (monitored blood pressure, temp, etc). The medication was delivered weekly and kept in the refrigerator. It came in something called a "ball pump"-- pre-measured, requiring no action from us other than hooking it up. They'll also send you pre-measured saline syringes, which you use to flush the line. For my daughter, the most uncomfortable part of the process was the initial placement of the PICC line. The daily infusions were not a problem at all.
