Redness and swellinng following vaccinations?!

Question:

Redness and swellinng following vaccinations?

My four year old had her 4 yr. immunization shots yesterday- MMR, DTP, Polio, Hep A and a Chicken Pox booster. She has had redness and swelling around the areas which she was injected, in the arm and thigh, since this morning. I called her doctor's office and the nurse said to mark the borders of the swelling sites with a pen to watch for expansion and streaks and to give her Benedryl. They haven't gotten worse and haven't gotten better, which is what concerns me. Has anyone ever experienced this with themself or their child? If so, how long did the swelling, redness and heat last? I'm open to advice as well. Thanks!

Answers:

The nurse had you mark borders to make sure she does not have an allergic reaction to any of the immunizations, which it sounds as tho she isn't since the margins aren't bigger. Redness and swelling at the site of the immunizations is a very common reaction. Give her Motrin instead of Tylenol as it is an NSAID, ( anti inflammatory) and will help with the pain and swelling. If it hasn't improved by tommorow, call her ped back and see what he advises next. They are supposed to give you a sheet from the CDC that explains possible reactions from local ( what your daughter has) to systemic. I take it they didn't give you that info. You can go into their website , www.cdc.gov/vaccines and view this info for yourself.
