On TV when they say fixed and dilated eyes what are they talking about and what is the prognosis?

I do know enough to know that it doesn't necessarilly mean that you are dead. I know dilated is "big" fixed im assuming means in a staring position. Does this mean a particular type of brain injury?
Answers:
Usually this means that death is imminent, if it has not already occurred.
