Confused about breaking a hip and blood clots?!

Question:

Confused about breaking a hip and blood clots?

If an elderly person breaks a hip then develops a blood clot in the lungs, how can blood thinner save their life? What if the blood clot traveled from another part of the body? What would the life expectancy be for someone in this situation? I appreciate any answers that will help me to understand. Thanks!!

Answers:

Blood thinners only treat the symptoms. Overuse also prevents normal clotting. To prolong the life expectancy of a patient with blood clots, the underlying issues must be addressed. You have to take care of arteriosclerosis, which is a hardening of the artery walls that are normally elastic for young people. In turn, the hardening increases resistance to blood flow, making it easier for clots to form in the femoral arteries alongside the hips ALL OVER AGAIN.

You also have to cut back on fatty foods and cholesterol. These can cause narrowing of the blood vessels by the buildup of fatty substances along the inside of arteries, a condition, known as atherosclerosis, which contributes to clot formation when a rupture happens and internal bleeding occurs. If a clot or thrombus breaks free from one area and travels to another, that clot becomes an embolus. If it obstructs a vessel in the brain, it's called cerebral embolism. If it gets lodged in the lungs, it's called pulmonary embolism. Both conditions are life-threatening.

When caught early within the first few hours, drugs called thrombolytics and anti-platelets can dissolve a clot in the heart before that clot can do irreversible damage or loosen and flow to the brain or lungs. Foods and supplements containing antioxidants should be taken on a regular basis. For those who are not allergic to aspirin, 81 milligram is recommended for daily intake.
