Hi! I am an adult, but I am taking the same insulin as you are!. Like you, my blood sugar is very high!. I went and saw an endo for the first time a month ago ( I was diagnosed in 2001)!. I was taking 4 units of humalog for breakfast and lunch and then 5 for dinner and for lantus I was taking 25 units!. He told me that I need to take my blood sugar before I eat and if it was higher to add a correction unit!. Here is the chart he gave me-
150-200!.!.!.add one unit
200-250!.!.!.add two units
250-300!.!.!.add three units
300-350!.!.!.add four units
350 and up!.!.!.add five units
So that means, my 4 units plus the correction units!. Then he told me to test two hours after I ate and if it was still high, that means I did not have enough insulin!. I raised my base unit to 7, so when I started out, I was taking up to 20 units before meals, now I take only 12!. He upped my lantus to 35 units also!. My personal goal for now is for blood sugar to be 100-120 before meals and 160-180 2 hours after!. Also, I have to slowly up my lantus until my morning blood sugar is less than 120!.
He also prescribed me a pill called metformin, which is for insulin resistance, and that has helped me out a whole bunch, but read up on it before asking your doctor!. I hope that I have helped out! I wish I saw your question sooner! I can't believe no one answered you!
Please show this to your parents, maybe this will help them with some questions!. I am 36 years old, my name is Kristine, if you or your parents would like to email back and forth for support or advice, please feel free to! I know how hard this disease is and having someone to talk to who has it too helps keep the spirits up! Good luck sweetie, and please let me know what your doctor is doing for you! If you feel that he is not doing a good enough job, find another doctor who will!

Ask your endocrinologist for a referral to a Diabetes Educator, there may even be one in his staff!. These are specially trained nurses who can sit down with you for an hour at a time, download your meter, talk with you, and help find patterns and make adjustments to your insulin!. Chances are you will just need to tweak your insulin-to-carb ratios a bit!. Since you were diagnosed recently, they may have been a little cautious about giving you too much insulin, they would rather bring it down gradually!. Now that it's been a few months, you may also be coming out of what they call your "honeymoon period", where your beta cells still pumped out a little bit of insulin!. Over the next few months the beta cells will die off completely, and you might need to tweak your insulin doses a little more, then they will stabilize!. Endo's just don't have the time to sit down with you and analyze the numbers much, so a Diabetes Educator can be a huge help!. I wouldn't go without one! Www@Answer-Health@Com
