Can you really survive with half a body??!

Question:

Can you really survive with half a body??

Following on from my question about Peng Shulin who was in the metro today, he has only half a body. Someone else posted a link to a site for Robert Eck who also had half a body, nothing below the ribcage. I know there is a procedure called a hemicorpectomy, which is removal of everything below the waist, including the pelvis, which may be carried out if someone has cancer in this area.(Holby City covered a story about this a year or so ago, it was extremely disturbing) It seems horrific to me, and i think i would rather die than end up like that, but to be able to survive like that is a miracle.

Answers:

surgical procedure has come on leaps and bounds in a very short time. sex change operations are thanks to an emergency field operation called a distal flap. being able to amputate everything below the waist and keep the patient alive for the rest of their natural life is no miracle its hard practise, you gotta loose a few to save a few. heart transplants kidney transplants blood transfusions, all possible in the modern age. lower half body amputation small potatoes to whats next maybe even a brain transplant.
