Does intake of alcohol have serious effect on a diabetic patient?!

Question:

Does intake of alcohol have serious effect on a diabetic patient?

Answers:

it depends on the type of diabetes you have and how you're treated. basically a lot of alcoholic drinks are high in sugar so are bad, but the real thing to look out for is dead in bed syndrome. don't worry - it's rare but does kill about 20 - 25 people a year in the uk - basically from a severe night time hypo. If you're treated with insulin and you've been drinking you can have a bad hypo in the night - normally if that happened n you didn't wake up then your liver would pump glucose into your blood and bring your blood sugar up (saving your life but making you feel like you've been hit by a bus in the morning!) - story goes that when you drink your liver is busy dealin with the alcohol so doesn't notice the hypo. Most of the people who die from it are young and have been binge drinkin - i was shocked when someone at my boyfriends mums work died from it last year - i knew about the syndrome but still didn't expect it so close to home! basically ya should be alright if you eat a long acting carb snack before you go to bed n i wake myself up at 3.00 or so just to check my bloods too but i'm v paranoid lol! xxx
