Pizza Allergy!?!

Question:

Pizza Allergy!?

I've eaten pizza all my life in my area, but one time I went to Sbarro and got a regular slice and had an allergic reaction! Theres no reaction to things without tomato sauce (like white pizza and other goodies) so their sauce must be the culprit.

I've also had the same reaction from a pizza place when I was in college. It's made me fear trying new pizza! Does anyone have any idea what might be in these specific pizza sauces that differ from the rest? I have a mild reaction to celery but nothing as severe as the hives, red around my mouth and itching that I experienced with these pizzas.

Thanks :)

-No, I'm not fat. (whats that got to do with anything?)

-I don't have the money to see a doctor or an allergy person though I would if I could afford it!

-I think it's got something to do with a certain herb or spice they may be using. But beyond that I have no clue.

Answers:

As another poster has said, you could be allergic to the tomatoes in the sauce, the yeast/wheat in the dough, the cheese or one of the spices. If you don't have the money to see an allergy specialist (your best option) I'd do 2 things:

#1, email or call Sbarro and tell them which kind of pizza you had, tell them why you're calling and ask for the ingredients so you can make a list of possible offenders. If you can remember the pizza you had in college, make the same phone call and get the ingredients as well.

#2. Do an elimination diet. Don't eat wheat (unless you already do and have no reaction...in that case, skip the wheat), tomatoes, cheese, basil, rosemary, oregano or black pepper (common pizza spices) for 3 weeks. Then eat ONE ingredient at a time in a small dose and note if you have a reaction to it. If not, move on to the next ingredient on your list. Again, make sure it's a small amount so if you do have a reaction be prepared to make a trip to the hospital as you could have a worse reaction this time since you're going to be less able to tolerate your body's allergic response. I had to do this to determine a gluten and dairy intolerance.

As the others have said, be very careful. Each time you expose your body to the allergen it gets worse. I had a friend who had no idea she was allergic to the pink skin in shrimp until she ate it for the 3rd or 4th time and she almost suffocated due to her throat swelling and closing up. She had to be rushed to the ER.
