Can you tell me about cataracts?!

Question:

Can you tell me about cataracts?

I am in the beginning stages of having cataracs. The internet does not show anything about them. Can you tell me what happens and how long does a person go without having surgery?

Answers:

Cataract is a clouding of the eye's natural crystalline lens. UV radiation, loss of hydration, fiber compaction, smoking, and other environmental factors can accelerate cataract formation. There are many classifications, but three primary age-related cataract classifications exist, nuclear, cortical, and posterior-subcapsular cataract. Optometrists and ophthalmologists use a grading system (LOCSIII) to subjectively quantify cataract progression, describing volume and location within the lens. The clinician makes a subjective call based on this information and on the patient's desire for better contrast sensitivity and acuity.

The invasive intra-ocular surgery involves phaco-emulsification - a chemical vacuum process that dissolves the natural lens so that it can be sucked out of the lens capsule in your eye. Next, an intra-ocular lens (IOL) is inserted into the lens capsule. There are many new designs that can offer various levels of vision restoration, including accommodation. Choose wisely. You may choose not to have cataract surgery, a viable choice if you are in the beginning stages. You can decelerate cataract progression by wearing sunglasses, staying clear of smoke in any form, and eating a healthy diet. If your near vision is suffering, supplement your vision with additional lighting and 1 to 3 diopter reading glasses. Go to a pharmacy or dollar store and try on a few to see what you like. Try reading a magazine in the store. You do not need an optometrist for this. If you have glare problems or night vision problems, don't drive at night.
