Most of us grow up disliking injections and tend to assume that it must be awful to have to inject insulin daily!. The truth is that once you're actually in the situation you learn very quickly that it's with short needles and almost totally painless!. But you need to do it to realise that!.

Also, starting out, many people worry about whether they'll get the insulin amount wrong and feel squeamish about injecting in certain places, eg the tummy!. Again, it's only through experience that diabetics usually stop worrying and discover, for example, that the tummy is one of the easiest and most comfortable places to inject!.

It's also easier to do it yourself - once you've had a few attempts - rather than let anyone else do it!.

The discovery that you need insulin injections is mixed up with lots of negative emotions and fear of the unknown so it's a difficult time anyway!. I'm sure your mother will soon overcome her fears, understand the treatment better and feel more in control of her condition!. Just give her a little time to adjust!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

she refused to not take it!? Or refused to take it!?

Is she a new diabetic (type 1) or a type 2 that now needs insulin!? Sometimes a hospital chooses to use insulin to control blood sugar levels because they are concerned about interactions with medications they may need to give you for whatever reason you are there, and that can be scarry!.

If taking insulin is new, she may be more than just afraid of needles!. She may be feeling like the disease is now controlling her life because she is now dependant on the insulin!. It can be a normal reaction to the feeling of loosing one's independance, or even a feeling of failure!. Type 2s often feel that way, like they didn't do "it" right, or try hard enough at "it", and now everybody will know because they take insulin, when in reality the disease may have progressed on its own to that point in spite of their efforts)!.

Depending on her age, she may remember a time when being diabetic was difficult (before home test strips), when people didn't talk about it openly, or heard stories about it being a death sentance (which it was before 1930)!.

Lots of people still think diabetes means you can never enjoy the foods you like, or go on vacations anymore, or have kids (of course you can do all those things)!. Or that people will see the needles and think you're a junkie (I'll admit, my car dash has used needles on it and I see people look at that when they walk by and that used to bother me, but not anymore)!.

Most diabetics are not fearful of taking insulin because it's a matter of life and death! Shots hurt, sometimes you hit a spot that just hurts like crazy!.
Your mom has a lot going on and maybe she just wanted to be in control of something!. I hope she's feeling better!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Needle phobia is one of the biggest fears around!. What people need to realize is that insulin syringe needles are so thin and short that you barely (if at all) feel them!. Www@Answer-Health@Com

Because they fear of being insulin dependant!. Www@Answer-Health@Com
