Long, but hopefully helpful!.!.!.

The best advice I have is to have great communication with the neurologist! I do not see myself as an MS victim, I just happen to have it!. Like I happen to have a spouse, 2 rambunctious kids, a demanding job and professional leadership roles, and 2 dogs!. It's a lot to manage but doable!.

We are constantly learning more about MS!. But there is currently no cure!. Run the other way from anyone/any drug/any herb offering you "cures"!. Treatment goals for MS are to reduce the number of attacks, improve recovery from attacks, slow MS's progression, and relieve complications due to the loss of function (i!.e!. numbness, weakness, loss of muscle coordination, problems with vision, speech, bladder control, etc!.)!. My Mom and Aunt have had it for many year and do not take meds!. They do have flairs, but no major complications!.

Because the symptoms have a broad range and are often subtle, MS may not be diagnosed for months or years after the onset of symptoms!. Indeed, I was diagnosed last year when we accidentally caught it on MRI (I was having the MRI for something else)!. But I can look back now at times over at least the last 8 years when I had symptoms, but attributed them to something else!.

I'm a nurse with MS!. I spent a great deal of time talking with my doctor and reviewing the literature to decide which drug was best!. Copaxone is a shot everyday but no flu-like symptoms!. Because I have two very active children (3 and 4), along with still working part-time and chairing my professional organization, I chose Copaxone so as not to have flu-symptoms!. Copaxone is an expensive drug, but my insurance covers it, so I pay $15/mo!. There are days I don't want to "shoot up", and in all honesty I skip a day about once a month, a small reprieve!. But I know I will get through it, even if I don't get used to it!.

I've had some flairs while on Copaxone!. But I have also been tracking them against my monthly cycle!. Many women notice they have more symptoms mid-cycle or right before they begin their period!. Don't you love hormones!?

I'm sure many MS patients will read this and think I am lucky!. My persisting symptoms are not visible!. Because I don't have visible problems, I worry people either forget or don't realize I have a disease that is stressful to me physically and mentally or even think I am stupid when I can't communicate well!.

Of my MS, the following things are persisting issues!.!.!.
--Visual changes: can't get a precise glasses prescription so everything is just a bit off!. At 20:30 most people wouldn't notice!.
--Speech impediment: problem articulating words!. Probably the thing I can trace back the farthest!. This is the thing I hate the most!. I worry I don't sound smart, particularly hard on me if I am teaching at work or speaking to someone professionally who doesn't know MS is the problem and I can't think of the right words!.
--Going right along with the speech problems, is decreased concentration!. Probably the thing my husband gets the least!.
--Fatigue, which is very sensitive to hormonal changes!.

Transient problems, that I have rarely!.!.!.
--Muscle spasms, fatigue, numbness, and prickling pain in my legs!.
--Had paralysis on the left side one time, which resolved quickly with high dose steroids!.
--Dizziness and being off balance, have fallen on the steps a few times!. I've been clumsy for a long time, makes me wonder was it clumsiness all along or MS!.

All of these are common for MS patients!. Here's a easy to http://www!.medicinenet!.com/multiple_scle!.!.!.
I also like the "MS for Dummies" book!. For me MS was the devil I knew what with my mom having it!. But the book was a good reference for my husband!. Plus there were tips I hadn't heard of or thought about!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
