Could I get my son's appendix out without it bursting?!

Question:

Could I get my son's appendix out without it bursting?

Many people in my family including me have been through appendicitis, and I don't want my son to go through it. Just to be safe is there a way I can get his appendix out, so in the near future it won't burst? How much would the surgery cost?

Answers:

Appedicitis is simply the inflammation of the appendix, usually by a blockage. The appendix is really a vestigal organ, meaning the it was used during the early days of man, cro-magnon, homo-erectus time-frame. Appendectomies have been performed for quite a few decades now for appendicitis. Lately though in the last decade or so, less-invasive techniques have been used, more along the lines of antibiotics and medicinal treatments for the blockage and inflammation. If the appendix needs to be removed, then of course the only option is surgery. Your primary care physician or pediatrician will explain the operation and post-op treatments also to you. As far as cost, surgery cost an arm and a leg no matter what the procedure. Check with the financial and billing departmetns of your hospital is payments options are needed. They can help! Good luck to you and your son. Take care!
