What possible prohibitions are there while having chemotherapy?!

Question:

What possible prohibitions are there while having chemotherapy?

i am scheduled for chemotherapy after a colon surgery taking away an adenocarcinomatic sigmoid mass...through research i've learned usual side effects of chemo as mouth sores, therapy induced diarrhea, vertigo, vomitting among others....though my doctor will be giving me pieces of advice, i want to know from those who experienced the therapy themselves what i may or not do or eat during the process...thanks..

Answers:

You should probably avoid large crowds. Your immune system will be down and it will be easy to catch colds or whatever from other people. Wash your hands often, and ask others in your house or room or wherever to do the same. You may also consider wearing a mask and/or gloves while in public places.

If you are neutropenic (your white blood count is below 1000 or 1.0.. your doc will let you know if you are) you will need to avoid all fresh fruits and veggies. Other foods will need to be cooked thoroughly.

Those are basically the main things. Everything else really varies from person to person like how bad your side effects will be. I get nauseated very easily and have to eat all my foods cold because the smells make me sick, but that may not be the case with you.

If you are staying sick a lot drink a lot of fluids. Gatorade will help with your electrolytes and things like boost will help with the nutrients. If you find yourself having bad diarrhea, use something like baby wipes instead of toilet paper. You will get cleaner and it will be less harsh on your tush.

Also, if you find yourself sick to your stomach a lot, dont be afraid of taking meds. Your doc should give you some RXs for nausea. When you start feeling it, take something. You may end up asleep a lot, but it is better than puking your guts up. My experience is that once you start, you dont stop.
