Answers:
Because of a defect in the chloride channel of the mucus membrane cells that line the inside of the lungs, CF patients lungs have become more or less defenseless to foreign invaders!. When you breath in foreign matter (like a bacteria) the cells in contact with the foreign matter are supposed to excrete chloride to kill the invader!. CF patients cells won't excrete the needed chloride for this process to take place!. Also the mucus is thicker and stickier than normal so the lungs can't move the matter to clean themselves!. There are multiple strains of this bacterium and CF patients lungs don't have the ability to fight them naturally!. Pseudomoas is basically a broad term that could be a number of more specific strains in that family!. Depending on the strain and the severity of CF this bacteria may be a slow grower or very aggressive!. CF patients almost always have at least one of the more slow growing pseudomoas strains present!. Mainly because it would take a long time to get rid of it completely and even if they did it would come right back again!. We are all exposed to this bacteria on a daily basis but healthy lungs don't have a problem coping with it!. So for CF patients, when the bacteria growth gets out of hand they have to go in for an extended hospital stay where they receive strong antibiotics and other treatments to eliminate or nearly completely eliminate the bacteria!. As you can imagine these recurring bacteria infections cause lung damage!. Over the years this organisms infectious damage and recurring treatment damages take their toll on the patient!.
