Mother has had rhumatoid artritis for 41 years and now we have had to go to morp!

Question:

Mother has had rhumatoid artritis for 41 years and now we have had to go to morphine?

We have had to go to morphine to control pain and as a result, she hasn't eaten in 2 days. She is bed-ridden and is sleeping 23 out of 24 hours a day. How long can she go without eating.......feeding tube is out of question, she cannot handle that nor any breathing aparatus or surgery. What can I expect and how long does she have left?

Answers:

Its hard to say how long she has left. Ask the doctors and you should ask about her eating. If she is now on morphine, I hate to say this but you should prepare yourself. I am so sorry. One thing you should think about is that if she is on morphine and sleeping, then she is probubly not feeling tha pain and that is the best you can really hope for right now. I don't have rhumatoid arthritis, I am 33 and have degenterative arthritis, and i can tell you that hers is a lot worse, and the pain I deal with is agony. So if they are keeping her comfortable then that is the best thing. I am sorry and I feel for you, but like I said if she is comfortable right now, then you should try to find comfort in that, and understand that when she does pass, that she will finally be arthritis free and able to run adn be pain free and happy. i am not a religious fanatic, but I do have faith and I do believe in a beautiful place after death. I lost my mother and I know that she is in a beautiful place and doesn't want me to be sad, but to celebrate her life by remembering the good memories. I know you are hurting and I totally understand, but always remember that a mother always wants happiness for her children even if they aren't here with us. she is comfortable on the morphine, spend time with her and talk to her even if she is asleep. Hold her hand and tell her everything you want to say, even if she is asleep. and try to always remember that when she is gone, she is pain free.
