Problems with Diabetes at School?!

Question: Problems with Diabetes at School!?
I am having problems with my daughter
Answers:
when i was in elementary school what my mom would do was pack me a little snack in my purse(i thought i was so cool for having a purse) and then during class i would just take it out and eat it
and with your daughter i would just ask the teacher to remind her to eat it!.and pack foods that are easy to eat (i had fruit roll-ups and crackers)

with the lunch thing just tell them that you would like the help with the insulin and portion control but your daughter is responsible enough to eat it all (well if she is) and ask them to please leave her alone

its hard when your young with diabetes because your different from everyone else so you should really try to have them not treat her too differently from the other kids

o and i know this is a while away but when she reaches middle school you really should try and get her to be allowed to test and give herself insulin without going to the nurse
my mom did and its way better that way Www@Answer-Health@Com

I have been through the same thing and know how you feel!.
Do you have a 504 plan in place !?
http://www!.diabetes!.org/advocacy-and-leg!.!.!.
I had to fight to make sure my daughter went on every field trip and was able to test her sugar in school!.
The lunch Nazi's were alerted to the fact that my daughter should eat all of her school lunch!.One day when she was about 6-7 , she told me she wanted to bring her lunch on hot dog day since the hot dogs were foot long and just too big for her!.Her twin sister piped up with " they are about 12 inches long ! "
I let the school know that half the hot dog meal was fine for her!.
It is a constant fight!. Your child is young and still needs help with eating and testing!.
Keep her away from the nurse as much as possible!. There are sick kids there!.
As she gets older, she will become more independent and be able to do more herself!.
Take it one day at a time and always be your child's best advocate!.
Good luck!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

the school needs to take more responsibility in a situation like this, and you may have to force the issue with them, it is not like you are being picky, it is a serious health issue for your daughter!. you are right, the nurse needs to be held responsible, my kids went to school with a diabetic child and they had to make her eat snacks and lunch in the nurses office to ensure that her blood sugar levels remained good!. the principal may need to take a few minutes out and go to her class room and make her eat the snack to help the nurse, but one bad incident of low blood sugar is all it would take for me to threaten to sue if they can not be made to see the necessity of what you are asking, and they are legally bound to do soWww@Answer-Health@Com

Just be up front with the teacher!. Say, Look are you a doctor or a nurse!? No your not!! My daughter has problems and they need to be addressed!. If you keep having problems with the teacher talk to the principle!. If you cant get any action out of he/she go to the school board!!

Also with your daughter, I know you probably have but just try to sit and talk to her and tell her the importance of eating her snacks, but as a parent don't beat yourself down cause kids will be kids!. She is just probably going thru a stage!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Lessons start at home!. I have 2 diabetic kids!. When they were diagnosed, (one was diagnosed at age 1, the other at age 3) I started in immediately teaching them about diet!. They are never too young!. Although you may think they don't understand, you would be amazed at how much you are teaching is actually getting through to them!. I actually gave my kids less insulin when they went to school!. Being an RN, I know that a little higher blood sugar reading is much better than having to worry about them having a low at school!. My kids ate a snack when every one else in the room ate theirs!. They never did anything differently as your child is doing!. My kids classes had snacks until they got into the second grade!. I made sure they ate a good breakfast, one with good carbs, usually some oatmeal or something that kept the blood sugar from falling before lunch!. They ate the same lunch everyone else ate, but learned in time (because they were taught at home) to stay away from most of the deserts!. They would eat maybe a few bites of it!. Like I said, having a blood sugar that was a little higher, but still within range, was fine, even if it went over some!. This way my kids were not a problem at school, and no one ever thought they were drama queens or kings!. Teaching them about diet is one of the most important things you can do when your child is diabetic!. Giving in to them when they want things that is not good for them, is not teaching them anything!. Yes, it can be hard, but not all lessons we learn are nice or fun!. I never had a problem with the school because of my kids disease!. When they got older they had no problems with their diets!. Your childs teachers are not responsible for making sure you teach your child good habits, you are!. They are just there to make sure she does what she should when she should!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I agree with your second suggestion!.!.!.being 6 years old she would have a tendency to mind-wander and be prone to distractions even without Diabetes!.!.!.but WITH diabetes her blood-sugar levels can cause lack of O2 to the brain causing her to lose focus!.!.!.if she were in a controlled environment with the School Nurse for a few minutes daily to have her snack, you would be assured she is eating it!.
The School is making too much out of this!.
Just make sure GINA knows how VERY important it is that she EAT REGULARLY and takes some responsibility for it!.!.!.My 13 year old daughter Taylor has gone all through school with a little boy who is diabetic and there was never Drama about it!. It has always just been dealt with and managed the way it should be~~Good Luck~~Www@Answer-Health@Com
