Questions About MRSA?!

Question: Questions About MRSA!?
My friend's child has MRSA!. It's in his ear and it's draining!. He's on a second round of antibiotics (same one they used the first time!?) They keep tissue in his ear to keep it from leaking!.
I knew they were going to be at a gathering so I told my children, who are all under 7, that they did not need to be getting in his face or touching his ear!. If they did, then they needed to go wash their hands!. Also, if they saw him touching his ear then touching a toy, they should not touch that toy!.
His mom got mad and left when she found out I told them that!. Her husband later called mine and chewed him out!. He said that their boy was not contagious because he's been on antibiotics for a couple days and that we were over reacting!. Among other not so nice things!.

They haven't been back to the doctor to be sure that the antibiotics are working yet and
his ear is still leaking!.

How contagious is MRSA!? Isn't it fatal if it gets in the blood!?
Is it over reacting to tell your children to wash their hands after being in close contact with another child that has MRSA even though he's being treated!?
What would you have done!?Www@Answer-Health@Com

Answers:
It was very smart of you to tell your children to wash their hands, avoid toys, etc!. And MRSA is contagious through contact!. I would have done the same or perhaps not even let my kids play with him!.

Patients with MRSA in the hospital are put on contact precautions!. That means that all staff to gown and glove before entering the room!. Visitors are encouraged to do the same but typically refuse as it is impersonal to the patient!. For the visitors who do refuse, I encourage thourough hand washing before leaving the room!.

While it is good that he is on antibiotics, until the MRSA has cleared up he still is contagious!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
