C-Diff: Do you want to know how I got better?!


Question: C-Diff: Do you want to know how I got better!?
So this isn't really a question, but I would like to share my success story with other people who might be suffering from C-Diff (a very scary bug!) I am so fortunate to be out of the woods that I feel it is my responsibility to share some of the things that I believe really helped me to get better!.

First of all, I am a healthy young mom!. I ran a half marathon several months before contracting C-Diff, and I have always been very healthy!. My spouse works in an Intensive Care Unit and that is the only explanation we could think of for how I became ill!. I did not contract C-diff after taking any type of antibiotics!. My doctor was very bewildered by my case!.

After testing positive for C-Diff I was given a 10 day course of Flagyl, which only worked at first!. Within three days of getting off of Flagyl I was sick again, even worse!. However, my specimen came back as "negative"!. Fortunately, my doctor believed that I was still positive (I was green and had passed out at the grocery store with my toddler in tow) and he prescribed a one week course of Vanc!.(He believed that the negative c-diff reading of the specimen was b/c there was still flagyl in my system) Thank goodness for Vanc!. I started to feel better within a few days, but was scared to death of a recurrence after reading horror stories on the internet!.

After researching advice from others who had previously suffered from C-Diff I started to apply what I had learned, and I'm here to tell you that there is hope, and even light at the end of that scary tunnel!.

Here is what I did (in addition to all the hygeinic stuff you've already read about):

I started to read literature on Pro-Biotics (natural bacteria in the body that is eradicated by C-diff and antibiotics)!. I discovered that by adding fermented foods to my diet that I was helping to re-introduce much needed healthy flora in my digestive system!. I began to include the following foods in my diet: Kefir (a yogurt type drink with loads of pro-biotics!. Found at most grocery stores), pro-biotic yogurt, sour dough bread, sauerkraut, etc!. as well as Pre-biotics (food that helps to "feed" the pro-biotics) such as oatmeal, whole grains, leafy greens, berries, etc!. (I recommend reading the Pro-Biotic Revolution and/or The Wonder of Pro-Biotics)!.

I stopped drinking soda!. Specifically Diet Coke because I had previously been consuming a lot of this!. As I read more, I discovered that caffeine does a great job of killing the good flora in our bodies!. I have quit the stuff cold turkey, and don't plan on drinking it again!.

I made sure to get a good night's sleep!.

Finally, I began to take a couple Saccharomyces Boulardii (Florastor) capsules every day!. It is a yeast, a natural bacteria, that has been found to aid the digestive problems associated with C-Diff specifically!.

It took a few weeks to feel like my stools were nice and solid again, but it did happen!. My spouse and toddler never got sick!.

When I was sick I honestly believed that I would have to suffer for years and years, and have to sign up for fecal therapy!. That was not the case, after all, for me!. I have a lot of compassion for those suffering from C-Diff who are not having a successful resolution as I did!.

I hope that by posting this I am able to help someone out there!.
