Meningitis question,who is at risk?!

Question: Meningitis question, who is at risk!?
Hi,I was wondering why patients with meningitis were quarantined in the hospital, meningitis can be caused by many types of bacteria including some common everyday bacteria such as strep etc but the problem starts with the patient provides a route of entry to the CNS system due to a medical condition!.So basically to the hospital worker why would he or she not develop a sore throat or something similar when in contact to this bacteria and not meningitis because they are not presenting a route of entry like the real patient was!?Or maybe the quarantine wasnt to protect the outsiders but thge patient!?

Simply when is a relatively common strain of bacteria is the risk for meningitis,I did not think everyone was at risk because how is the bacteria going to enter our CNS!?Www@Answer-Health@Com

You do have a lot of questions, and I would like to try answer most of them!.!.!.

First off, meningitis is a CNS infection, bacteria going into the meninges infecting the surrounding fluids, etc!. Bacteria can enter through the circulatory system (blood), a direct opening through the cranium (like an open skull fracture), or nasal fracture or nasal injury [we harbor many types of organisms in our nasopharynx (nose and throat area), like the infamous Neisseria meningitidis causing meningococcemia]!. These organisms travel through the cavernous sinuses which are in direct contact with the brain and meninges!.
Also, infections of the ear, can get to the brain!.!.!.

You're asking why hospital workers like nurses do not develop meningitis when they are in contact with meningitis patients, and what is the purpose of the quarantine!?

They do have the risk of contracting the bacteria, but they take special precautions to avoid it, like gloves, masks, even gowns, and strict handwashing!.!.!. most of these bacteria do not only cause meningitis, but also some respiratory infections, or even just be asymptomatic (making the people "carriers")

the quarantine is also to protect the patient from other infections, since the illness itself brings down the immune system!.!.!.

In general, common bacteria like streptococci or meningococci would not cause meningitis in everyone, since they are usually "harmless", but are deadly in some groups, like immunocompromised patients, infants, and the elderly!.!.!.

Gosh, I hope that helped! Good luck!Www@Answer-Health@Com
