Will I get breast cancer like the others?!

Question: Will I get breast cancer like the others!?
I recently lost my mum to cancer!. She got it when my brother was 8 months old, had the chemo, radio and mastectomy over the period of a year and a half!. Then the docs said all traces of cancer had been removed!. Just after this x-mas she went back to the hospital after not seeing anyone for a year and having severe pain coming from her reconstructed boob and they said the cancer was back!. She had it in the brain, spine, small specks in both lungs and back in the reconstructed boob!. They gave her 18-24 months to live!. She passed away peacefully 18 days later after a horrible 5 day sickness battle!. She had caught Neutrapenia Sepsis (a form of blood poisoning) after she scraped her knee when she fell into a bush!.

My great nan died with breast cancer, and numerous other cancers, and i fear i may get it, or it will skip me and go to my girls!.

Is there a way of telling!?

Answers:
I'm so sorry to hear you've lost your mother!.

Hereditary breast cancer is rare - only 5-10% of breast cancer cases are hereditary!.

However as your mother was young when she developed it, and as there have been other cases in your family, it may be that your mother's cancer was due to a faulty gene!. The known faulty inherited genes are BRCA1 and BRCA2!. If your mother carried one of these genes you have a 50% chance of having inherited it, though inheriting it doesn't mean you will definitely get cancer!. If you haven't inherited it, your daughters won't!. If you have, they have a 50% chance of inheriting it!.

So you may want to talk to your doctor about having the appropriate tests to see if you do have one of these genes - this link tells you more about who genetic testing is suitable for, and other pages the site gives you a lot more information about genetic breast cancer

Even if your mother didn't carry one of the known faulty genes you will still be regarded as at increased risk of breast cancer, because your mother had it!. This means you're likely to have mammograms younger and more frequently!.

Best wishes to you

You can have a test!. I think it's called the BCA1!. It can't tell you for sure but tells you your odds!. My sister tested positive so chose to have both breasts off prophalacticly!. I decided to wait and see!. I don't smoke, I get a mammogram and physical yearly and do self-breast examinations!.
I'm 62 and so far, so good!. :)Www@Answer-Health@Com

Do as the lady above said!
Health is important!. Anything that is said to be cancer related, first or excessive second hand smoking, should be stopped all together!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
